In January 2014, we embarked on a two-night adventure in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong. Our base was at the  InterContinental Grand Stanford, strategically chosen for its walking distance to the iconic Avenue of Stars, offering breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour.

Day 1: A Scenic Start

Touching down in Hong Kong, excitement fueled our first stop—the majestic Tian Tan Buddha, fondly known as the Big Buddha, perched serenely on Lantau Island. We hopped into a taxi straight from the airport, eager to witness this statue amidst lush greenery. There were a lot of stairs up to Tian Tan Buddha.

We then made our way to the hotel to refresh before heading to the picturesque Avenue of Stars. This waterfront promenade is perfect for leisurely strolls, with panoramic views of the city skyline. As night fell, we watched the dazzling 8 PM Symphony of Lights show, a vibrant display that danced across the skyscrapers. Dinner nearby introduced us to a unique spot with an Australian-inspired menu, complemented by stunning harbor views.

Day 2: Enchantment and Elevated Views

Our second day was all about magic and marvels. We boarded the MTR to Hong Kong Disneyland. The moment we stepped onto the Disney-themed train, adorned with Mickey-shaped windows and handles, the enchantment began. Visiting just before the Chinese New Year celebrations, the park buzzed with festive decorations, adding an extra sprinkle of joy to our adventure.

While both Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland in California offer the signature Disney magic, there are notable differences in their ride offerings that make each park unique.

Exclusive Attractions in Hong Kong Disneyland:

  1. Mystic Manor: Unlike the Haunted Mansion in California, Mystic Manor offers an entirely different storyline with a trackless ride system. It follows Lord Henry Mystic and his mischievous monkey, Albert, through enchanted artifacts—an experience rich in cultural flair and technological marvels.
  2. Grizzly Gulch: Home to the thrilling Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, this ride is Hong Kong’s answer to Big Thunder Mountain but with unexpected twists, sudden reversals, and surprises that are unique to this park.
  3. Toy Story Land: Hong Kong’s Toy Story Land offers attractions like RC Racer, Slinky Dog Spin, and Toy Soldier Parachute Drop, which provide a different experience compared to California’s Pixar Pier. The immersive theming places you right in Andy’s backyard, surrounded by oversized toys.

As evening approached, we set out for Victoria Peak via another MTR ride followed by a taxi. Although the weather was chilly and the city cloaked in haze, the nighttime view from the Peak was spectacular. The glowing cityscape, with its shimmering lights reflecting off the harbor, painted an unforgettable picture. It was cold up here.

Day 3: A Shopper’s Paradise

Our final day in Hong Kong was dedicated to a shopping spree. We explored the bustling areas around Harbor City, a haven for fashion enthusiasts and souvenir hunters. Later, we navigated through the lively chaos of the Ladies Market, renowned for its myriad stalls offering everything from trendy apparel to quirky trinkets. It was VERY busy here.

Though brief, our Hong Kong journey was packed with cultural landmarks, thrilling experiences, and scenic wonders. From serene sites to the bustling city streets, every moment was a vibrant snapshot of this dynamic city.
