Margaret River is a beautiful coastal region just a few hours’ drive from Perth, filled with stunning beaches, world-class wineries, unique caves, and plenty of natural scenery. During our short two-night trip in 2012, we found that even a brief getaway was enough to fall in love with the area.

Day 1: Arrival and Coastal Explorations
We left Perth in the morning and arrived in the Margaret River region by early afternoon. Since the weather was a bit cool, our goal was exploration rather than sunbathing.
- Busselton Jetty: Our first stop was the iconic Busselton Jetty, stretching nearly 2 km into the turquoise waters. Walking the length of the jetty and taking in the panoramic ocean views was an unforgettable start to the trip.
- Yallingup Beach, Prevelly, Meelup Beach, and Smiths Beach: beaches offered dramatic coastal scenery and rolling waves. While it wasn’t warm enough to swim, the rugged beauty made for perfect photo spots.
- Canal Rocks: A must-see! The natural rock formations and crashing waves provided a scenic and adventurous coastal walk.

Day 2: Caves, Wineries, and Sweet Treats
Our second day was devoted to the classic Margaret River experiences: caves, wineries, and gourmet treats.
- Ngilgi Cave (Yallingup Cave): This “adventure cave” was a highlight. We even found a spot where you can lie down, look up at the illuminated stalactites, and feel completely immersed in nature’s beauty.
- Voyager Estate & Leeuwin Estate: These world-renowned wineries offered both tasting experiences and stunning vineyard views. Even for casual wine enthusiasts, the cellars were a treat to explore.
- Bettenay’s Nougat: A sweet detour, where we enjoyed delicious handmade nougats in a variety of flavors.

Wildlife and Scenic Moments
One of the unexpected highlights was spotting wild kangaroos grazing in open fields along the way. These sightings added a quintessential Australian touch to our road trip experience.
Optional Stops and Relaxation
If the weather had been warmer, we would have spent more time at Meelup Beach and Prevelly, both perfect for swimming and coastal picnics. Even in cooler weather, they were incredible to stroll and photograph.
Takeaways
Margaret River is a destination that packs an incredible variety of experiences into a short trip. Whether it’s strolling along Busselton Jetty, adventuring in Ngilgi Cave, savoring wine at renowned estates, or enjoying local nougat, there’s something for every traveler. A couple of nights from Perth is just enough to taste the region—but it will leave you wanting to come back for more.
