Townsville, nestled on the northeast coast of Australia, is a vibrant tropical city that offers an incredible mix of nature, wildlife, and relaxing coastal experiences. My visit here blended the charm of small-city life with the thrill of exploring natural wonders. We lived here for a few summer months in 2013.

When to Visit

Townsville’s summers are hot and wet, famously nicknamed the rainy season because when it rains, it pours! I even considered buying rain boots for the first time. Despite the rainfall, the weather remains warm and tropical. Locals recommend visiting during their winter months, when skies are clearer and the humidity drops.

Shopping and City Life

For a dose of city life, Townsville offers a few malls and shopping streets:

  • Stockland Mall: Recently added a Myer department store, making it a convenient one-stop shop.
  • Castletown: Another local favorite for a casual shopping day.
  • Flinders Street: The heart of downtown, where you can find boutique shops, cozy cafes, and evening dining spots.

The Strand: Coastal Charm

The Strand is Townsville’s picturesque beachfront promenade, perfect for a leisurely stroll under rows of swaying palm trees. Also has a few cafes. Townsville doesn’t have big waves here – so no surfing.

The highlights include:

  • Magnetic Island Views: Breathtaking scenery with the island rising from the Coral Sea in the distance.
  • Rock Pool & Netted Swim Areas: Designed to protect swimmers from stingers and jellyfish. The rock pool’s water is warm.
  • Bottles of vinegar on the beach are a quirky reminder of the tropical marine life. Lots of different signs about the different types of jellyfish and what to do depending on which jellyfish you might encounter.
  • Family Fun: Kids can enjoy a small water park and lagoon-style pool near the ocean.

I loved walking along The Strand, eating at its cafes, and relaxing in the warm 28–30°C (mid-80s°F) waters.

Natural Attractions

Magnetic Island

A short 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island is an explorer’s paradise. The island is small so it’s easy to drive around… plus not all the roads are open to all cars (need a four wheeler or something). We spent an entire day driving around the island and enjoying its unique beaches and activities:

  • Horseshoe Bay: We went tubing and jet skiing here, and paddle boarding was also available.
  • Alma & Picnic Bays, West Point: Tranquil beaches with areas enclosed for safe swimming.
  • Snorkeling and Wildlife: The island is known for snorkeling and encounters with friendly wildlife. They also have a few enclosed places to swim.

During our visit, a King Tide dramatically changed the landscape from high-tide shorelines to wide, puddled sands by evening.

Castle Hill

This iconic pink granite hill offers 360° panoramic views of Townsville and the surrounding coast. The drive to the top is short, though be prepared for strong winds!

Anzac Memorial Park

A peaceful green space along the water, perfect for a reflective walk beneath the beautiful tropical trees.

Billabong Sanctuary

For a hands-on wildlife experience, Billabong Sanctuary is a must-visit. This is my FAVORITE wildlife experience in all of Australia! Also, they have a timetable of events going on the whole time you are there. So you get to go hear about the animals then sometimes get to touch/hold/feed them as well! I love how interactive it is. The interactive programs allow you to:

  • Hold a koala and a wombat (a bucket-list dream for me!). For a little extra you get to hold and take a photo. I’ve always wanted to hold both so I was excited!!!
  • Pet and feed kangaroos and even pet a dingo. A bird can go on your finger.
  • Learn about Australia’s famous crocodiles. Hold a baby one and watch the grown ones get fed.

The sanctuary hosts daily presentations and feeding sessions to deepen your connection to the animals.

(We went to the Aquarium here, but probably would not do that again.)

Wallaman Falls

A two-hour scenic drive from Townsville takes you to Wallaman Falls, the tallest single-drop waterfall in Australia. The journey winds through rainforests—where we were surprised by cows casually standing in the road! The view of the falls cascading through the lush greenery is unforgettable and well worth the drive.

Nearby Escapes

One of the highlights of our trip was a side journey to the Whitsunday Islands, about a 3–4 hour drive from Townsville. This tropical paradise deserves its own post, but suffice it to say, we loved every moment of our visit.

Townsville is a tropical gem that combines adventure, wildlife, and relaxation. From palm-lined promenades to rainforest drives, every day holds a new discovery. Whether you’re looking for peaceful coastal vibes or a chance to hold a koala, Townsville delivers an authentic North Queensland experience.
