Day 2 of Our Vancouver Adventure in 2012 – A Journey to Victoria

The second day of our three-day escapade to Vancouver was dedicated to a place that holds a special spot in our family’s heart—Victoria. Many years ago, my grandparents celebrated their honeymoon amidst the charm of this coastal gem, and revisiting it felt like tracing the steps of family history.

The Ferry Ride: A Gateway to Tranquility

Our day began with a picturesque ferry ride from Vancouver to Victoria. As we glided across the waters, the salty breeze tousled our hair, and the horizon stretched endlessly, dotted with small islands and distant sailboats. The ferry itself was an experience—offering panoramic views, cozy spots to relax, and the perfect backdrop for countless photos.

Travel Tip: If you’re planning a trip, consider bringing your car along. We opted without, relying on the local bus system, which added unexpected delays. While public transport gave us a glimpse into the daily rhythm of Victoria, it also ate into our precious sightseeing time.

Butchart Gardens: The Road Not Fully Traveled

Our first stop was Butchart Gardens. The journey there, though scenic, was lengthy on the bus. By the time we arrived, we realized we were racing against the clock. We decided not to venture inside, saving time for other must-sees. The vibrant blooms we glimpsed from outside hinted at the botanical beauty waiting within.

Totem Poles

One of the highlights was encountering the majestic totem poles scattered around Victoria.

Parliament Building: A Grand Architectural Marvel

Next, we made our way to the iconic British Columbia Parliament Buildings. The grandeur of the architecture, with its stately domes and intricate stonework, was awe-inspiring. The lush green lawns surrounding it were perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering countless photo opportunities. We managed to peek inside, marveling at the ornate interiors that echoed with history and governance.

The Fairmont Empress Hotel: A Glimpse of Timeless Elegance

No visit to Victoria is complete without admiring The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Its ivy-clad façade against the backdrop of the harbor looked straight out of a postcard especially with all the boats and flowers.

Dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory: Comfort Food Heaven

As the day wound down, we indulged in a hearty dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory. The cozy ambiance, adorned with vintage décor and warm lighting, was the perfect place to relax. The pasta was comforting, the company delightful, and it served as a fitting end to our whirlwind day.

Reflections on Victoria

Though we couldn’t tick off every item on our list, our day in Victoria was filled with beauty, history, and cherished memories. The city’s charm is undeniable, its landscapes breathtaking, and its cultural tapestry rich. If we could do it again, we’d bring a car for more flexibility—but even with the hiccups, Victoria left an indelible mark on our hearts.
